Darlene Mayes, a 73-year-old grandmother, was arrested after police seized approximatly $300,000 in cash and four pounds of marijuana from her home in rural Craig County, Oklahoma. Authorities also recovered a semiautomatic pistol and revolver.
Vinita Police Chief Bobby Floyd told The Daily that authorities had been investigating the drug ring for about five months, but only learned of the dealer’s identity earlier in the week. Mr Floyd told kjrh.com:
‘It was an extreme wow moment.’
Mayes was arrested Monday. Her son Jerry Dorsey was arrested on Monday after he was found carrying almost a pound of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and $2,100 in cash.
Craig County Sheriff Jimmy Sooter told kjrh.com that he believes Mayes supplied the drugs to surrounding areas. The small town borders Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas.
The money, which was recovered with the help of drug-sniffing dogs, will be divided between the local sheriff’s department, the police department, and the District Attorney’s office and will be used to fight the drug trade.
Mayes, who originally told officers the money was from her retirement fund, faces five criminal charges, including possession of marijuana, maintaining a dwelling where drugs are kept or sold, as well as possession of a firearm. She is a former employee of the Department of Human Services, and has no criminal history prior to her arrest.
